Sample Workshops

Creating Welcoming Environments

  1. Oppression Model: The system that provides the foundation upon which to build an understanding of oppression.
  2. Oppressors/Anti-Oppressors: Roles within the system.
  3. How we enter the world of the “Other”.
  4. Privilege Exercise: Who benefits and who loses within the system of oppression.
  5. Connecting the “isms”: Racism, sexism, classism, homophobia/heterosexism, ableism, etc.
  6. How each person can create change: Brainstorm for different environments (residence life, human resources, athletics, etc.). How to share power and resources, how to develop policies and practices that are responsive to the needs of each individual, how to move from an ethnocentric to a polycentric culture.
  7. Continuum from intolerance to the celebration of difference.

From this workshop we go into more depth on each of the issues. For example, we do workshops on homophobia/heterosexism and ableism.
